You (yes… YOU) are invited to the North Bay Granite Club’s Community Bonspiel on Saturday October 19 from noon until midnight.

With two divisions, bad and mostly bad, there’s room for all area residents to give Curling a chance on this day. All joking aside, the event offers a pro/am category that encourages existing curlers to team up with their friends, as well as a rookie category for teams consisting of all beginners. An Orientation to Culing is included with entry on the Friday night prior while there will also be experienced on-ice mentors volunteering their time to assist new players throughout.

For only $30 participants will receive three 4-end curling games, lunch, snacks, dinner, trivia, and live music. More information and online registration is available at northbaycurling.com/community.

Should anyone be unable to attend this day, know that there are other opportunities for the public to experience Curling, including the club’s popular Curling and Board Games night on the first Friday of every month between November and March. Instruction, curling, board games and pizza are included for $25/person.

90-minute Orientations to Curling are offered throughout the season with the first sessions planned for Wednesday, October 16 at 6 p.m., Friday, October 18 at 6 p.m., Friday, October 18 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, October 20 at 7 p.m. Folks can register to try curling at these times by visiting northbaycurling.com/orientation.

For anyone looking for a more elaborate introduction to the sport, 7-week Learn to Curl programs are offered for kids and adults beginning October 29th. Kids under 10 years of age meet Tuesdays at 4 p.m.; while kids under the age of 18 go Thursdays at 4 p.m. and adults have the option of Sundays at 7 p.m, Tuesdays at 9 a.m., or Wednesdays at 6 p.m.

No participant must commit to a membership until they have discovered an interest in continuing.

All instruction is led by the Granite Club’s newly hired Regional Curling Professional Laura Johnston. The reigning Northern Ontario mixed curling champion is excited about her new role aimed at growing membership through more formal and consistent learning opportunities for prospective players of all ages and abilities.

Johnston is additionally available for private lessons and offers a weekly clinic for existing curlers to brush up on their skills Mondays at 8:30 p.m. or Tuesdays at 11 a.m.

Each session focuses on a different theme with the first being “Back to Basic”, which will revisit matters such as balance, hack set-up, body positioning, and more.
