BayToday.ca has learned that Battalion Assistant Coach Ryan Oulahen will be named the new head coach of the Flint Firebirds on Friday.

The news comes three days after the Ontario Hockey League named longtime OHL GM and coach George Burnett as the team’s new General Manager.

Oulahen has been with the Battalion as an assistant coach since 2011.

The 31-year-old former Battalion captain was a fifth round choice of the Detroit Red Wings in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft.  However, while playing for the Red Wings AHL affiliate in Grand Rapids, Oulahen sustained a career ending injury in March of 2009.

Back in April, Flint Firebirds owner Rolf Nilsen was suspended for five years by the Ontario Hockey League.

That suspension put the team under the direction of league commissioner David Branch.

The Battalion minus Oulahen are back on the ice on May 28th and 29th for their Spring Orientation Camp for their 2000 and 1999 birth year prospects along with a handful of free agents.
