Barons prevail at NDA Track and Field meet

Barons' Grace Michauville was recognized for the second consecutive year with the Fergie Dowdall award as the day's top performer.

The Algonquin Barons track and field team which took home the overall championship at the NDA track and field meet Thursday, May 18th at St. Joseph-Scollard Hall.

The Barons captured the overall team, boys and girls banners along with banners in midget girls, junior girls and senior boys. Other banners were won by SJSH in midget boys and senior girls as well as Chippewa in the junior boy category. 

Grace Michauville was recognized for the second consecutive year with the Fergie Dowdall award as the day's top performer.

Michauville finished 1st in the junior girls shot put and discus, winning both with record throws. Dominique Baldasaro, Lyric Loranger, Tim Hatton and Heather Nakanishi were also nominated for the award.

NDA Champions for the Barons include:

Dominique Baldasaro - 200m, 400m and 300m Hurdles with 2 new records 

Simon Giroux - 200m, long jump and triple jump (new record) 

Catherine Héroux - 800m, 1500m, 3000m

Sophie Laperriere - 200m, 400m, 800m

Mélina Levasseur - long jump, triple jump (new record), high jump

Josée Rochon - 100m, long jump, triple jump

Grace Michauville - shot put, discus (new records)

Phil Coutu - high jump, triple jump

Cole Goode - shot put, javelin

Madison Desmarais - 400m, triple jump

Roxanne Rochon - shot put, discus

Meggan Bessette - 80m hurdles

Yannic Castonguay - 100m

Jon Champagne - long jump

Kierra Janveau - long jump

Joel Leblanc - 800m

Up next for local athletes is the NOSSA championships being hosted at Laurentian University in Sudbury Wednesday and Thursday, May 24th and 25th. 

The winners in each event will qualify for the provincial OFSAA championships in Belleville June 1st-3rd.
