The NDA Basketball started off for the Algonquin Barons Senior Boys team as they downed the Widdifield Wildcats 69-46 in the season opener for both teams.

Braeden Villeneuve and Riley Roy were the offensive catalysts for the Barons as they hit for 24 and 20 points respectively.

The Wildcats were led by Luis Oyeniran with 19 and Ryan Zamperoni chipped in with 9.

"I'm really happy with the way the team responded tonight," said Barons Head Coach Tim Lowe.

"We're a young team we are just starting to trust each other.  I was really happy with the way that Mathieu Ranger and Zach Martel played.  Both are grade 10 and were probably a little nervous tonight, but they played hard," added Lowe.

Martel added 9 points and was a solid rebounder while Ranger hit for 7 points.

The Barons jumped out to an early 14-9 lead and they stretched the lead in the 2nd and held an 11 point lead at the half.  But the 3rd quarter was the turning point as they outscored the Wildcats 21-6 and were able to cruise to their first victory of the year.

Both teams are participating in the 58th edition of the Tomahawk this coming weekend.
