The Algonquin Junior Boys football team moved on to the NDA junior finals for the second consecutive year with an 18-0 victory over the Franco-Cité Patriotes Thursday afternoon.

The Barons defense gained some momentum early after an interception from Brody Matton-Labrecque. After a short drive and field goal by Aiden Dionne, the Barons defense tried to contain running back Tyler Dionne of the Patriotes.

After a long run, the Patriotes were stopped and 4th and short to give the Barons the ball back. On the ensuing drive, quarterback Andrew Robillard was able to avoid the rush and scramble into the end zone to put the Barons up 8-0 just before the half.

The second half continued much the same with both teams spreading the ball around. This time, it was linebacker Ethan McLean getting the interception on a throw by QB Drew Duquette to set up the Barons in Franco Cité territory. The Barons offensive line was able to slow down attacking linebacker Zédrick Fortin, allowing several strong runs by Kaleb Grant to push the Barons closer to the end zone before Robillard found receiver Nolan Berubé for the touchdown. The extra point by Dionne pushed the Barons lead to 18 in the fourth quarter. Cornerback Evan Wells made a great play for an interception on the ensuing drive to seal the game late for the Barons.

The Barons run defense was supported by the solid play of Gavin Bell along with captains Jacob Pearce and Dalton Marleau-Vautour.

The Barons, last season’s NDA champs, will be travelling to St. Joseph-Scollard Hall to face the first place Bears at Cundari Field. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
