The Algonquin Barons Senior Girls Basketball team, with only two returning players from last season OFSAA bronze medal team, opened up their season with 2 wins and 1 loss in the Elmwood School Senior Girls Invitational in Ottawa on the weekend. A strong core of graduating junior players are hoping to bolster the lineup and continue the great tradition of girls basketball at E.S.C. Algonquin.

On Friday night, they lost to the host school Elmwood 36-24 in a very sloppy contest which was plagued by early season jitters by both teams. Tanya Simard led the Barons with 6 points, while Alisha Perron and Mila Paris added 5 each.

In their second contest, they soundly defeated South Carelton 50-18. Simard was the top scorer with 24 pts and also added 9 rebounds. Kimberly Gibson chipped in 9 points, while Genevieve Dumas pulled down 8 rebounds.

Needing to win there third game by at least 19 points versus South Grenville, the Barons came out strong and were close to pulling it off, as they lead 46-26 at the end of three quarters. However, untimely mistakes and unlucky bounces were the order of the day and they failed to advance to the finals despite a 56-47 victory. Simard was the top scorer with 26 points and 15 rebounds, Paris added 15 points, while Gibson and Perron each chipped in with 6. Dumas had another strong rebounding game by gathering 10 boards.

The NDA regular season begins Tuesday for the Barons as they host the Widdifield Wildcats in a Senior-Junior doubleheader at the Algonquin Gymnasium beginning at 4:30 p.m. for the senior game.
