t may be that time of year where everyone is thinking about hockey season, but for some, it is time to think about the courts, the badminton courts to be specific. The North Bay Badminton Team has been training vigorously over the last few weeks and made their way to the Mandarin Badminton Club in Markham over the Thanksgiving weekend. The tournament drew 110 athletes from across the province to compete at the Jr B event. Jr B is the 2nd tier of provincial badminton tournaments hosted by Badminton Ontario, preceded by the Jr A circuit.

Without a permanent facility in North Bay, training becomes more difficult than those with an access to facilities that are specific to badminton. With that said, it is not where you train, but how you train and that showed over the weekend as North Bay athletes held their own against Jr B veterans. All members of the North Bay team competing over the weekend were attending their first Jr B tournament.

Many close matches were played, ones that could have gone either way, ultimately coming down to the last few points. Head coach Kurt Tempelmans Plat was ecstatic by the weekend's events.
"Honestly, this was a big step for all of the athletes that I brought down this weekend," said Tempelmans Plat.

"I find it determines how competitive you really want to be in the larger spectrum. I was impressed with all of may athletes as they all stood up to the challenge and played some of the best points that they ever have. They really gave it their all, and considering that it was their first tournament at this level, I couldn't have asked for any more. Not to mention everyone earned a least one win over the weekend!"

The team has a few weeks off and will then make it's way to Sudbury for their Northern Ontario Badminton Association event.
