The North Bay Athletics season came to a halt Saturday night in front of a packed house at Pete Palangio arena. The Athletics were dumped 8-3 once again at the hands of the Soo Greyhounds.

The victory gives the Soo club a sweep in the best of 5 Northern Ontario Bantam AAA Hockey League Semi-Final.

The Athletics were hoping to stay in the game early to have a chance to extend the series, but 2 early powerplay markers in the first 5 minutes of the game opened things up. Geoffrey Gieni started the scoring early while Kyle Jean made a nifty deke on Athletics goalie Dylan Marshall to make it 2-0. Anthony Colizza, cousin of former Centennial Chris Thorburn, scored on a nice cross-ice pass to make it 3-0 around the halfway point of the first frame.

The Athletics closed the gap two minutes later as Matthew Pepin banged one past Justin Hogsden making it 3-1.

The Greyhounds got their 3 goal lead back in a hurry as Colizza added his 2nd of the period making it 4-1 after one.

Kyle Jean and Tyler Liukkonen increased the Greyhounds lead in the second before the Athletics tried to make it interesting with two goals in less 3 minutes, one by Joel Senecal, the other a pretty goal by Pepin, his second of the game to make it 6-3.

But any momentum was quickly stripped away from the Athletics as Kevin Closs scored a shorthanded marker on a breakaway to give the Hounds a 7-3 lead.

Mike Rivard added another goal on a steal in the Athletics zone early in the third period and that was how this one ended 8-3 for the Greyhounds.

Despite a tough year for the Athletics including only 5 regular season wins and two playoff victories, Cundari is still very proud of his North Bay Athletics who bought into the program.

"This is the best group of kids I've ever coached," Cundari said after Saturday's loss.

Meantime the Soo Greyhounds season continues as they will play the winner of the Sudbury and Onaping Falls series. Sudbury leads the best of 5 series 2-0 after back to back wins last weekend.
