Algonquin student competes at Junior National Badminton Championships in Burlington

Gabriel Pharand competed at the 2018 Yonex U23 and Junior National Badminton Championships May 14 – 19th at Haber Recreation Center, Burlington, Ontario.

Gabriel competed in U19 Boys Singles, U19 Boys Doubles and U19 Mixed Doubles.

In U19 Boys Singles, there were 41 entries.  Gabriel was a consolation finalist, losing the final match 21-14 and 21-10 to Alexis Nadeau from Quebec.

Gabriel won the consolation final in Boys Doubles with his partner, Sam Ma, from OBA club in Markham, winning the game in three sets, 21-14, 21-23, 21-11 against Harry Soo (Ontario) and Rory White (Nova Scotia). 

In the Mixed Doubles event, Gabriel won the consolation final match in two straight sets (21-12, 21-12) along with partner Kalie Rhéaume from RA Badminton Club in Ottawa.

Semi-finals continue Friday evening for Main Draw events, with Final games scheduled for Saturday, with medal presentations to follow gameplay.

There are 264 athletes from across Canada competing in over 20 events from U15 to U23.

Gabriel competed at 6 national badminton tournaments this season, finishing with two 3rd place bronze medals in U19 Boys Doubles.  He also competed at six provincial A-level tournaments finishing with a silver in Boys Doubles, two bronze medals in Mixed, a consolation singles and consolation doubles win.

 

Gabriel is in grade 12 at École Secondaire Catholique Algonquin in North Bay. He trains at Mandarin Badminton Club in Markham, as well as is an assistant coach and trains with KTP Athletics in North Bay.
