Some North Bay seniors are feeling pretty smart these days.

That's because they're taking part in a free program - through VON - called SMART, that is aimed at improving their health and quality of life.

"SMART' stands for "Seniors Maintaining Active Roles Together", says Breanna Pearce, a Recreation Therapist and Exercise Coordinator with the Victoria Order of Nurses in North Bay.

"SMART is a free exercise class for seniors who wish to improve their strength, balance, and flexibility. Regardless of the individuals' current ability level. SMART may help to increase fitness levels and reduce social isolation. It’s a great way to achieve 120 minutes of activity each week," explains Pearce.

She adds that the free program is currently offered in several locations around the city, saying there are "ten locations in North Bay, some situated at apartment buildings, community centres, non-profit organization activity rooms, and retirement residences. The newest location is in the West Ferris Arena. It is the only free exercise program in Ferris. This location has quickly become a favourite."

Throughout all of Northeastern Ontario, there are over 700 participants taking part. Locally, in the Gateway City, Pearce says they doing well, but have room for more seniors to take part, explaining that "we have around 150 participants in North Bay, and the goal is 210 participants."

She adds that just about anyone could consider taking part.

"Exercises can be conducted sitting or standing. Each exercise relates to activities of daily living. Within a class there will be low impact aerobics, strengthening, balance, flexibility and stretching. A favorite exercise is the "Sit to Stand." Participants complete 10-15 "Sit to Stands" each class. This exercise helps with trunk and lower extremity strength. (Essentially) it assists with transferring onto and off of furniture."

So if you're interested in getting involved, what's your next step?
