Driver stopped for speeding

MATTAWA – On Oct. 30, 2016, at approximately 11 p.m., a member of the Mattawa Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) was on patrol on Highway 17, Papineau-Cameron Township, when he stopped an eastbound vehicle. 

The vehicle was observed travelling at a high rate of speed and, as a result, was stopped for “Stunt Driving”.

As a result of the officer’s investigation, the driver, Ivan Smojic, age 29 of Ottawa, Ontario, was arrested and charged with;

  • Driving While Ability Impaired - Motor Vehicle (Alcohol) contrary to section 253(1)(a) of the Criminal Code (CC)
  • Driving with More than 80 mgs. of Alcohol in Blood, contrary to section 253(1)(b) CC
  • Race a Motor Vehicle - Stunt contrary to section 172(1) of the Highway Traffic Act

The accused was released from police custody and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in North Bay on Nov. 15, 2016.

There is no safe amount of alcohol consumption when driving. Anyone who suspects someone is driving while impaired is urged to call police by dialing 9-1-1 immediately.
