School Bus Driver Charged

EAST FERRIS – On Jan. 23, 2017 at 3:35 p.m., members of the North Bay Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a call for service on Lake Nosbonsing Road in East Ferris Township. Initial reports indicated that a school bus had collided with a pickup truck.

OPP investigation has revealed that a school bus left a private drive into the path of a westbound pickup truck. Furthermore, there were children on the bus, but no injuries were reported in the collision.

As a result of the investigation Robert Williamson, 65 years of age from East Ferris Township, Ontario was charged with Left Turn – Fail To Afford Reasonable Opportunity To Avoid Collision, contrary to section 141(5) of the Highway Traffic Act of Ontario.

OPP responds to tractor through the ice

POWASSAN – On Jan. 25, 2017 at 3:33 p.m., members of the North Bay Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and the North Bay Regional Health Centre Emergency Medical Services (EMS) received a call for service at the Hydro Pond in Powassan. Initial reports indicated that a tractor being operated on the ice - broke through - and became submerged with the operator still inside.

Family members of the operator soon arrived on scene and with the assistance of OPP and EMS began performing life-saving measures. The male was transported to hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

He is identified as Eugene Kunkel, 82 years of age from Powassan, Ontario.
