On June 19, 2016, at approximately 2:45 p.m., members of the Powassan Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a report of a missing swimmer on Lake Nipissing in the Callander Bay area.

Search for missing swimmer

LAKE NIPISSING – On June 19, 2016, at approximately 2:45 p.m., members of the Powassan Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a report of a missing swimmer on Lake Nipissing in the Callander Bay area.

A 29-year-old male visiting from Brazil went swimming off a boat that was approximately a kilometre from shore. He began having difficulty swimming due to the powerful waves and went under the water and did not resurface.

An extensive search for the swimmer was conducted by members of the Powassan OPP Detachment and North Bay OPP Marine Unit. The search continues today with the assistance of the OPP Underwater Search and Recovery Unit (USRU).
