Driver dead after crash on Highway 401 in Toronto, road closed for part of day

TORONTO — Police say a driver has died after a crash on a highway in Toronto early Friday.

Ontario Provincial Police report a car collided with the back of a transport truck that was stopped in a live lane of traffic on Highway 401 around 3:30 a.m.

Sgt. Kerry Schmidt says the collision caused a fire in the car.

He says the driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

The eastbound express lanes of Highway 401 will be shut down for part of the day as police investigate.

Schmidt says no one else was injured.
