STEINBURGH, Helen Isobel (McDougald)

Posted

Born October 7, 1907. Died peacefully at Nipissing Manor, May 20, 2004. Last of nine children of Neil and Annie McDougald of Tara, Bruce County. A fine and dedicated teacher, she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree through part-time studies, graduating from University of Toronto in 1938. She met her husband Kenneth Robert Steinburgh when both were teaching at Matachewan, Ontario. Widowed young, she resumed teaching in order to support her five young children. Helen finished her career at Paul Davoud School, CFB North Bay and enjoyed painting, needlework, gardening and travel to England, Scotland, West Africa, New Zealand and Australia. Product of a Scotish Presbyterian upbringing, she had a strong moral compass but was also blessed with a keen intelligence, inquiring mind and forward-looking and independent spirit. In her 80s, she wrote the McDougald Family History. Predeceased by her husband, son Neil and daughter Nora, she is survived by son Alan, daughters Jane (Dr. Tom Beer) of Melbourne, Australia and Susan (Justice Michael Bolan) of Callander, and son-in-law John Low of Mansfield, Ontario. Also surviving are grandchildren Dugald, Tansy and Kenn Beer, Andrew and Eric Low, Christine and John Bolan, step grandchildren Cathy, Michael, Gordon and Bryan Bolan, and great-grandchildren Emily and Stephanie Bolan. Private arrangements. A memorial service is planned this summer when Jane and Tom are in Canada. Sincere thanks to the staff of Nipissing Manor for their kind and tender care of Helen, especially in her final days.
