Smith, Margaret
It is with many a sad heart we announce the passing of Maggie Smith on December 24th, 2020. Margaret Mary Smith (nee Motley) was born July 24, 1922 in Tetford, Lincolnshire, England. Predeceased by cherished husband Basil (aka Smitty) and brothers Jim (Jean) and Geoff Motley. Beloved Mother of Ross (Nancy Benson), California and Andrea (Marino Sassatelli) Italy. Adored and adoring Grams to Laura and Jennifer. Loving Aunt to Jane (Australia), Susan (UK) and Rebecca (UK). Auntie Marg to many, Maggie to many more. A long and happy life well lived, full of love
and service. A Volunteer Extraordinaire, she dedicated herself to the North Bay community for more than 40 years including the Cassellhome Tuck Shop and teas, at North Bay Civic Hospital with the Rehab Angels, the Outreach Speech Pathologist Programme for children, One Kids Place and annually sold UNICEF Christmas cards. She so loved Christmas! Her friends were far and wide, from her early years in Sussex, UK and her many moves as a military wife in Canada and they were never forgotten. Nor were old dogs and a series of homeless cats who were usually just as friendly and always adored as family members. Neighbours were never alone for holidays. Family dinners were held for every occasion and if she wasn't cooking, she brought her famous Trifle. For friends she made food or made sure she was there when needed. The door to her house was always open. She loved company to stay over. Tea was at 4 o'clock and you could just drop in. We shall all miss that. Her two book clubs provided a wonderful source of intellectual stimulation with fiercely smart women evolving into multi-generational friendships and support. Thank you to Dr. O'Grady and her wonderful staff Bonnie and Jennifer for their unconditional care. Special thanks to all the amazing staff at Nipissing Serenity Hospice for their gentle care, compassion and kindness. And to the Motley Angels - Jan Stroud, Sue Russell, Lisa Mellow, Brenda Walsh and Caroline Houghton-Jones - for their support, loving care and open hearts. A Celebration of Life will be planned at the Waterfront (Maggie's request) at a future date. Donations in her memory would be gratefully appreciated to the Nipissing Serenity Hospice (www.nipissingserenityhospice.ca) or Forgotten Ones Cat Rescue (www.forgottenones.ca).
