(June 18, 1976 – November 12, 2019)

After a long and courageous journey with cancer, Michael Kowal (age 43) passed away peacefully.  Mike leaves behind his wife Sara (Marcil), his children Cayden, Carter, Isabella, and Katelyn, and his dog, Stella.  Michael is predeceased by his father, Edward Kowal.  Mike leaves behind his mother, Barb Kowal, along with his siblings, Bob Kowal (Melanie), Randy Kowal (Joyce Martin), and Catherine Golding (Mike).  Mike will also be dearly missed by his Mother-in-law, Connie Marcil, sister-in-law, Lisa Jones (Lucas), and many nephews and nieces.

First and foremost, Mike was a devoted husband, father, coach, teacher, and athlete. He was a fierce competitor and was a natural athlete who played both basketball and volleyball at varsity level. He was an amazing father, who dedicated much of his time to his kids’ sports teams.  Even during his chemotherapy treatment, with his numb hands, Mike would still go on the ice to coach. In his final days, Mike managed to cheer on his kids at their games and practices.

Mike enjoyed his career as a teacher and loved teaching others. Past students frequently approached him to share their life stories and tell him what an impression he had made in their lives. He had an ability to build or construct whatever he set his mind to, tackling both small and large projects.

Mike’s own children described him as a warrior who never gave up.  Overall, Mike was a kind, loveable, strong, brave, thoughtful man with an amazing work ethic, a passion for learning and a good sense of humour. Mike had an uncanny resemblance to his father, Ed; not only his looks, but in all that he did. He was his father’s son - extremely practical, great with a hammer, and always looked for the good in others.

Mike will be missed by his family, friends, and all those who touched his life.

Visitation will take place on Thursday, November 14th, 2019 from 2 to 4 pm and 6 to 9 pm at McGuinty Funeral Home (591 Cassells St., North Bay). Funeral service will be held on Saturday, November 16th, 2019 at 11 am at Ste. Bernadette’s Parish (408 Gagnon St., Bonfield). If desired donations are suggested to the Nipissing Serenity Hospice and would be gratefully acknowledged by Mike’s family. The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Jinnah, Dr. Kumar, Dr. Hodge, all the Nurses, Staff, Medical Staff and the Radiology team at the North Bay Regional Health Centre.
