Johnson

It is with heavy hearts, we announce the peaceful passing of John Johnson in Courtenay, British Columbia on June 10, 2019 at the age of 91 years. Loving husband of Mildred Johnson (nee Blackett). Loving father of Sandra MacKinnon, Brenda Werner (Waun Fong), Karen Taylor (Jeff), Mary Smallwood (Reg) and Melanie Kennedy (Scott). Cherished grandfather and Poppa of 10, great grandpa of 10 and great great grandpa of 2.  He was predeceased by his parents; Ralph and Hilda Johnson and by his brothers Joe, Bob and Ted. John had a long career starting in the early 60’s at Mackies Van and Storage in Oshawa. He started out as a long-distance driver and in 1974 was promoted to Manager in North Bay where he remained until his retirement in 1994. He was known by everyone in the industry as “Gentleman John” as he truly was a gentle man. After his retirement, John and Millie enjoyed their winters in Florida. He was a devoted volunteer at the North Bay Crisis Centre, as the official groundskeeper. Along with his wife Millie, John also volunteered at the Gathering Place, helping to prepare lunches. He will be sadly missed by all his children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and friends. John was always generous and ready to lend a hand to anyone in need. His great sense of humour will surely be missed by all who knew him. He was definitely the King of Zing. Family will be receiving visitors at McGuinty Funeral Home (North Bay) on Thursday June 20th, 2019 from 6-8 pm where we will be sharing our fondest memories of dear old Dad. Memorial Mass will be celebrated at Holy Name of Jesus Church on Friday June 21, 2019 at 10:30 am. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Alzheimer’s Society would be gratefully appreciated by his family.
