SILKEBORG, Denmark — Canada's playoff hopes at the women's world curling championship took a massive hit after a 5-3 loss to Sweden on Friday morning.
Chelsea Carey's Calgary-based rink dropped to 5-6 with the loss against reigning Olympic champ Anna Hasselborg (10-1), putting Canada in a bad spot entering the final two draws of the round-robin competition.
Canada was in need of a win over Denmark in the final draw on Friday afternoon, two U.S. losses, two Japan losses and two Germany wins to have a chance of finishing in the top six at the 13-team event.
If that unlikely scenario does not transpire, Canada will miss the playoffs for the first time in 20 years at the women's worlds.
"We'll go out there tonight and give it our darndest (against Denmark) and see if we get some help," said coach Dan Carey.
Two misses loomed large for Carey, third Sarah Wilkes, second Dana Ferguson and lead Rachel Brown.
In the seventh, Ferguson's takeout just rubbed on a guard, leading to a go-ahead deuce for Sweden.
In the eighth, Carey's hit-and-roll went inches too far and was second shot, forcing her to draw for one instead of scoring a possible deuce.
Sweden scored another two in nine, locking up first place in the round-robin with the victory.
