Six charities, one in North Bay, working to meet the basic needs of people disproportionately impacted by COVID-19 will be the first to receive emergency grants through United Way Centraide North East Ontario (UWCNEO) Community Response Fund.

The fund, announced on March 25, was established to provide short-term, flexible, financial assistance to frontline charitable organizations across the northeast district.

“In times of uncertainty, working together is our greatest strength. Right now, people need access to food and hygiene supplies. The organizations that are receiving this first-round of funding have the expertise to respond to these immediate needs,” says Mary Lou Hussak, Executive Director with UWCNEO.

In North Bay, The Gathering Place will receive $3,000 to provide two extra meals per week and to expand its food rescue program.

Hussak adds, “We continue to accept applications for emergency funding and will to do so as long as there is a need."
