UPDATE Studded tires? We stand corrected say police

Violators could face an $85 fine, plus court costs and a victim surcharge, for a total of $110

Police update:

Still driving with studded tires? We stand corrected.

Northern Ontario drivers can legally do so until May 31st.

In a media release the North Bay Police Service issued earlier today, we provided incorrect information regarding a Highway Traffic Act regulation with respect to studded tires.

Previously, studded tires were only allowed from Oct 1st to April 30th. In 2014, the Ontario government extended the period when drivers who reside in Northern Ontario can use studded tires. The period is from September 1st to May 31st.

We apologize for the error.

If you live in northern Ontario, you can legally use studded tires on your vehicle from October 1st to April 30th.

Motorists are reminded that driving with studded tires on their vehicles from May 1st to September 30th is against Ontario’s Highway Traffic Act.

Violators could face an $85 fine, plus court costs and a victim surcharge, for a total of $110.
