During the week of August 21st to August 27th, the West Nipissing Police Service logged 185 calls for service.  Among those were 29 police assistance calls, 7 9-1-1, 6 animal complaints, 6 motor vehicle collisions, 2 thefts, 2 suspicious person calls, 2 frauds, 2 break and enters and 1 mischief.

On August 22nd, a call was received from a cottage owner located on Goose Island regarding a break and enter.  The owner told police that sometime between August 13th and August 21st someone broke into their camp and stole various items of clothing, dry food and fishing gear including a tackle box.  No suspects have been identified at this time.

On August 24th, a complaint was received about a hit a run which had occurred at the No Frills parking lot.  The vehicle owner said that on August 7th or the 8th, he attended the grocery store and upon his return to his van, he noticed his rear bumper had been damaged.  The damages are estimated to be between $500-$1000.   Police was not able to locate any suspects.

On August 26th, police responded to an audible alarm located at the Stereo Plus electronics store located on King St.  Upon arrival, the officers observed the lower part of the front door smashed inward which showed the entry point to the store.  Witnesses state that shortly after the alarm was heard, two suspects were observed running North on Main St and dodged behind the Royal Bank building.  The suspects were described as being in their late teens wearing dark clothing.  Once inside the store officers saw a new cell phone was located on the floor.  It’s still uncertain what, if anything was taken from the store.  A Scenes of Crime Officer attended the located to gather forensic evidence.  The investigation is ongoing.

A 26 year old male has been charged with 2 counts of Breach of Undertaking after officers attended a residence located on Third St.  On August 27th, the officers attended this residence and spoke with the accused advising him of an outstanding warrant out for his arrest.  The male was arrested and transported back to police headquarters where he was kept in custody and later brought to bail court.

The West Nipissing Police Service would like to remind all residents of amendments to the distracted driving law under the Highway Traffic Act.  As of September1st, anyone caught using a cell phone while driving will face an automatic fine of $490 along with 3 demerit points upon conviction.  Novice drivers face an additional 30 day driver’s license suspension upon the first conviction, a 90 day suspension upon a second conviction and a license cancellation after the third.

Another interesting amended law is that “tow trucks” are now added to the list of vehicle for which motorists are required to slow down and move over if they are stopped on the side of the road with their amber lights flashing.  The fine for this is $490 along with 3 demerit points upon conviction.

As well, drivers are required to leave a distance of at least one meter while passing a bicyclist.  This offence has a $110 fine attached to it.
