Stay off railway tracks and bridges, cops warn

Train bridges, like the one in Mattawa, are built for trains, not people

The Mattawa Detachment of the OPP would like to remind everyone to stay clear of railway tracks and bridges.

"Railway tracks, trestles, yards and equipment are private property. Walking or playing on them is illegal and dangerous," says Constable Shona Camirand,  Community Safety Officer.

"Train bridges, like the one in Mattawa, are built for trains, not people. If the train comes, there's nowhere for you to go. You can be hit by the train or fall from the bridge. Don't take chances."

Each year in Canada, several people lose their lives as a result of being hit by trains.

A general rule is, no matter how scheduled a train seems, there is always the possibility of an unscheduled train roaring down the tracks and, "any time is train time".
