Grade 7 student at St. Luke Elementary school, Alexandra Dech, is representing North Bay in the National Young Citizen’s Filmmaker Challenge, happening now until July 7.

Students from across the country are competing in the Filmmaker Challenge to secure a spot at the 2017 History Youth Forum in Ottawa this fall.

Dech won the Young Citizens Award at the North Bay Heritage Fair for her project about her grandparents’ immigration to Canada and created a video to help share her research and compete in the Filmmaker Challenge. Her video documents her grandparents' journey from Italy to North Bay, featuring interviews with relatives and even a visit to Pier 21 in Halifax.

“I read a lot about Pier 21 but I never really understood it until I heard my family's story of landing there in 1966,” says Dech. “When I was shooting my video at the edge of the Halifax Harbour, it was hard to believe that I was standing on the same floor where they took their first steps in Canada.”

Help Dech represent North Bay at the 2017 History Youth Forum by voting for her video .

Voting is open until July 7.
