St. Joseph-Scollard Hall Students Offered Elite STEM Opportunities

'I am really excited about the whole thing'

Three students at St. Joseph-Scollard Hall have been offered the opportunity to expand their knowledge in science, technology, engineering and math subjects (STEM) this summer.

Matthew McParland is a Grade 11 student who has been accepted into the prestigious SHAD program for the summer of 2017. Each year, SHAD invites 800 students from across Canada to attend a summer program to help empower exceptional high school students in STEM subjects. McParland will attend the month-long summer program at a host Canadian University.

Two more St. Joseph-Scollard Hall students have been accepted into an elite program for girls, called Think About Math! at the University of Waterloo. Samantha McKinley and Sarah Selander will be visiting Waterloo to learn about subjects like the environment, the stock market, and social networking applications like Facebook.

“I am really excited about the whole thing,” says Selander, a Grade 9 student. “I just found out a couple weeks ago and I’m really looking forward to going.”

Selander credits teacher, James Williamson, for helping to make math more understandable.

“We are thrilled for these students,” says Derek Belanger, Principal at SJSH. “We have incredible staff at St. Joseph-Scollard Hall, so it’s great to see our students excelling in these subjects and accepting these amazing opportunities.”
