When a man started yelling and screaming on a residential street in Elliot Lake at 3:30 in the morning yesterday, someone complained to the police.

When they arrived on scene at approximately 5:13 a.m. OPP officers spoke to the man and advised him to go back into his residence.

"The male appeared to be highly intoxicated by drug and/or alcohol," says Constable Phil Young. "Police tried numerous times to speak to the male with negative results. The male would not co-operate or comply with any directions given by police to stop yelling and go back inside.

"While attempting to arrest the male, he became resistive and assaultive towards police. As a result, police utilized the taser to safely and effectively carry out an arrest."

Darryl Newton, 48, from Elliot Lake, is charged with:

  • Causing a disturbance, and
  • Assault with intent to resist arrest.

Newton is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Elliot Lake, on September 3.
