Liberal Candidate Anthony Rota is pleased by the report of the Ontario Energy Board regarding Energy East confirming the need for TransCanada to reroute its proposed Energy East pipeline around environmentally sensitive areas.

Although pleased with the recommendations, Rota remains alarmed by the Harper government’s gutting of all meaningful environmental regulations as well as gutting the Navigable Waterways protection Act by delisting dozens of protected lakes which includes the source of North Bay’s drinking water, Trout Lake.  This move to delist Trout Lake would mean that the Harper government could allow the proposed pipeline to go under Trout Lake.

The report identifies a number of our lakes and waterways that will be endangered if the pipeline route is not changed and if adequate environmental regulations are not put in place.  – These waterways include Trout Lake, Lake Nipissing, Lake Temagami and the Mattawa River.

Our current Member of Parliament, Jay Aspin, did absolutely nothing to prevent our lakes from being taken off the protected list.  In fact, he voted in favour of delisting Trout Lake, and other crucial waterways.

Rota stated: “It is increasingly clear that in order to protect our environment, we must replace the Harper Government. “

Rota is committed to fight for robust environmental protection regulations.  He is also committed to getting Trout Lake back on the protected list so that we can all continue to enjoy our source of safe drinking water.
