NBRHC a Partner in Pregnancy Loss Workshop for Caregivers Date: Thursday October 23, 2014

[NORTH BAY, ON] –The North Bay Regional Health Centre is partnering with the Pregnancy & Infant Loss (PAIL)
Network for the first time to offer a one-day sensitivity workshop for caregivers who work closely with patients and
their families in a loss situation.

“To experience a perinatal loss is a defining moment for patients and their families. We need to ensure that our
front line workers have the skills and resources to care for patients and their families experiencing perinatal loss. It’s
about providing not only the right care – but the best care possible.” says Kim Carter, Manager of the Women &
Children Care Centre.

One in four pregnancies ends in a loss and 1 in 101 die in the final trimesters. The impact of losing a pregnancy or
child can be one of the most difficult encounters a health care provider has to deal with. This one day session will
provide training to health care providers that are supporting parents and families during their loss. Caregivers in the
maternal, infant and child field will benefit from training and support to handle the intensity of pregnancy and infant
loss.

“We are looking forward to meeting with a group of individuals who have made education of perinatal
bereavement a priority and are able to share their knowledge and insight with us” says Pat Stoakley, Registered
Nurse in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at the North Bay Regional Health Centre.
Stoakley also states “our hope is that this session will expand our understanding of the many ways to help our
families cope with the loss of an infant”. Participants are trained to care for bereaved families, share information on
the PAIL Network and other community supports, and provide opportunities for memory collection. Additional
workshop topics include grief theory and application, understanding pregnancy and infant loss, cultural competency
and memory building.

The PAIL Network is a registered Canadian charity committed to making a positive difference to those affected by
pregnancy and infant loss. PAIL is a leader in supporting families, raising awareness, and providing educational
programs to healthcare professionals and the general public about pregnancy and infant loss.
