Here’s a short list of famous people with learning disabilities:  Cher, Tom Cruise, Walt Disney, Thomas Edison, Albert Einstein, Danny Glover, Whoopi Goldberg, Tommy Hilfiger, Bruce Jenner, Magic Johnston, Jay Leno, Jamie Oliver, Michael Phelps, Suzanne Somers, Steven Spielberg, Sylvester Stallone, Vince Vaughan, Bruce Willis, and “The Fonz” Henry Winkler!  They can all be a source of inspiration!

Learning disabilities are very common – an estimated 5-10 percent of Canadians have LDs, and more than 50% of students who receive special education services have LDs.

THE FACTS:

·         Brain processes information differently

·         Average to above average intelligence

·         Invisible and lifelong

·         Can occur with other disorders (ADHD, etc.) and may run in families

·         They are NOT the result of economic disadvantage, environmental factors or cultural differences

·         People with LDs can succeed when solid coping skills and strategies are developed

Each and every one of our students has the “right to learn and the power to achieve.” Each of them deserves our investment in time and energy to help them reach their full potential.
