(NORTH BAY, ONT.) – With the support of the province of Ontario, six northern colleges are expanding access to postsecondary programs.

Under the new collaboration, Canadore College, Collège Boréal, Cambrian College, Confederation College, Northern College and Sault College are designing and delivering shared programming to improve and expand access to training opportunities in eight subject areas -- business, hospitality, media arts, health, community services, technology, trades and aviation.

“Our six northern colleges serve vast geographical areas and must respond to regional education and training needs,” said George Burton, President and CEO of Canadore College. “We have some very unique challenges in comparison to the rest of the province, but they are common among us. The program collaboration allows us to draw upon our own areas of expertise and pool resources in order to improve access to a quality college education for northerners and their families.”

Through the streamlining of resources and curriculum development, students will now be able to earn their credentials by taking courses delivered by partnering institutions, which will help to ease challenges to access in high-demand programs.

Ontario is investing $3.6 million over three years for the program. Each college is making an in-kind investment of $1.2 million over the same period.
