(WEST PARRY SOUND, ON) – The West Parry Sound Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) investigated eighty-nine (89) property damage motor vehicle collisions (MVC) for the month of November, 2014. Seventy two (72) of which were single motor vehicle collisions that can be attributed to driver error. Twenty six (26) occurred on Municipal side roads. The OPP reminds motorists that arriving safely at their destination is the primary goal. Drivers need to be aware of various factors to achieve that goal. These factors include:

  • Obeying the posted limits. Roadways are engineered to accommodate certain speeds, exceeding those speeds increases the likelihood of a collision, especially in winter conditions.  Municipal side roads can often be snow covered and slippery.
  • Remaining attentive while driving. Drivers need to talk or text on cell phones when they are pulled over on the shoulder safely off the roadway. As well, wild animals can run onto the roadway without warning.
  • Knowing your limitations and those of your vehicle. Driver’s abilities vary from person to person depending on their comfort level and experience. Vehicles, too, differ depending on their age and condition.

West Parry Sound OPP Staff Sergeant Ron Campbell says “Drive to the road conditions, the important part of the journey is to get their safely”

West Parry Sound OPP urges the public to exercise caution during hours of darkness as this is the predominant time for collisions involving wildlife.
