Dieter Buse and Graeme Mount, both professors emeritus of history at Laurentian University, have come out with a second volume detailing the region's military history.
The book “Untold: Northeastern Ontario’s Military Past, World War II to Peacekeeping,” put out by local publishing company Latitude 46, is being launched Oct. 10 at 7 p.m. at the Art Gallery of Sudbury.
Reading events are also coming up at the Timmins Museum Oct. 28, the Wordstock Sudbury Literary Festival Nov. 2, the North Bay Museum Nov. 5 and Chapters Sudbury Nov. 9.
Buse and Mount have spent the last few years researching and writing about Northeastern Ontario's military history, bringing the stories of this region's past to life in both Volume 1 and now Volume 2.
The first volume, released in October 2018, covers from 1688 to World War 1.
In this second volume, the authors present, among many topics, the Spanish Civil War, the internment of enemy aliens, prisoner of war camps in northeastern Ontario, and participating in World War II.
They show the participation, contributions, and sacrifice of men and women in all the services (army, navy and air force), as northeasterners fought in all the major conflicts. It touches on the Cold War struggles, Korean and Afghanistan wars as well as peace-keeping that helped shape Northeastern Ontario.
Through archival research, military documents, newspapers, diaries and personal letters, the stories reveal the sacrifices and challenges, how military activities and service impacted families and communities in northeastern Ontario.
The book also features over 130 photos, excerpts from personal letters and space for readers to make notes.
