Local chess players win in Timmins tourney

Evan Kilroy was able to continue his long-running winning streak at the Franco-Ontario Chess Championships with 30 wins and 0 losses in slow chess during the last five years of competition

Four Algonquin Secondary students took part in the 11th Annual Franco-Ontario Chess Championships in Timmins this past weekend, facing over 300 French speaking chess players from as far away as Brampton and Ottawa.  

Over the three-day tournament, students played six rounds of slow chess and participated in both a blitz and Siamese mini-tournaments during the evenings.

Evan Kilroy, grade 10 at Algonquin, won the overall individual event in the high school category with six wins and 0 losses, as well as tying for first in the blitz portion and winning the Siamese portion with his partner Yanick Mainville from Ottawa.  

Simon Cloutier , grade 7 at Algonquin, won the overall event in the grade 7-8 category with 6 wins and 0 losses, as well as tying for first in the blitz portion and placing second in the Siamese portion with his partner Sheldon Kilroy of Algonquin.  

Sheldon Kilroy, grade 7 Algonquin, placed second overall in the grade 7-8 category with 5 wins and 1 loss, as well as placing second in the blitz portion and second in the Siamese portion with his partner Cloutier.  

Martin St. Jules played very well in his second chess tournament finishing with 4 wins in 6 games.
