Sim, John (Ken) ( 1948- 2015) – Ken passed away at home on January 1st after a short illness, with his best friend and soul mate, Therissa Denis, by his side.

Sim, John (Ken) ( 1948- 2015) –

Ken passed away at home on January 1st after a short illness, with his best friend and soul mate, Therissa Denis, by his side.

Loved and cherished by his children, Ken (Candice Savard), Natalie (Jason Graham), their mother Jennifer Valenti, and daughters  Lauri (Alex Millar), Alana (pre-deceased) and three grandchildren, Kyle, Rhyan and Georgia.

Ken was immensely proud of each of them.

Ken was born in Calgary, Alberta to John and Helena Sim but grew up in Ottawa.

He joined the Canadian Armed Forces at the age of 18 and his first posting was to North Bay, which he chose to call home after a short career in the Air Force division.

Ken was an avid musician and was well known in the “music” community. He played in many different bands, from the original BobKartTrio to the Descendants of Tyme, Checkerboard and then Sweet Nothin’, just to name a few.

Ken managed his own business for many years (Excel and Spare Change) and was known for discounting his stock for his friends before they even asked….

After his retirement he volunteered for several years at Cogeco where he loved meeting the celebrities and being part of a television station team.

With his many friends, Ken enjoyed his retirement spending time cottaging, and playing music.

His love of music inspired many others to also take up music.

He loved a good laugh.

Ken’s mom once described him as “the salt of the earth,” which in modern terms means “those of great worth, honesty and reliability.”

For those who were privileged to know him, they would agree.  He will be missed.

Honouring Ken’s wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral.  He wanted to be remembered in joy and story and song, so a Celebration of Ken’s life will take place at a later date.
