Clusters of persistent severe thunderstorms tracked through the North Bay – Mattawa area yesterday, bringing around 35mm of rain in less than four hours.

Downpours at times were very heavy.

There is still the potential for more thunderstorms today.

Chippewa Creek overtopped its banks yesterday evening and flash flooding was experienced throughout the area during heavy downpours.

Area water bodies are still experiencing unseasonably high levels from the heavy rain the was received last Thursday and through the Canada Day weekend. Levels are expected to continue to rise or remain high as the effects from this rain event reach area lakes and larger watercourses.

The risk of thunderstorms can cause flash flooding in low lying areas.

Residents, especially those in low-lying areas, are encouraged to monitor the conditions as they develop. Parents are encouraged to keep their children and pets away from watercourses and shorelines. Municipalities are encouraged to monitor water crossings to ensure the continual movement of water through culverts and bridges.

A close watch on local conditions and updated forecasts and warnings from Environment Canada is also recommended.

Staff at the North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority will continue to monitor weather and watershed conditions and update this message based on the changing weather/streamflow conditions. This message will be in effect until (or updated before) Friday, at 5 p.m.

Flood Outlook gives early notice of the potential for flooding based on weather forecasts calling for heavy rain that could lead to high runoff, and lakeshore flooding or erosion.
