(SOUTH PORCUPINE, ON) – The South Porcupine Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is pleased to partner with the Nishnawbe-Aski Police Service (NAPS), the Ontario Women’s Hockey Association (OWHA) and Drug Abuse Resistance Education Program (DARE) on a donation project geared towards supporting youth in isolated northern communities.

The OWHA President, Fran Rider and Pat Nicholls, Director of Operations, collected approximately 35 hockey bags and 40 boxes of new and gently used hockey equipment that includes warm clothing, sticks and water bottles.  Ron Malette of Tisdale Bus Lines arranged to pick up the items in Mississauga and delivered them to the South Porcupine OPP detachment for no charge as his contribution to the initiative.

With help from NAPS Inspector Eric Cheechoo, the items will be transported across the winter ice roads and delivered to officers in various communities to be distributed as needed.

The official hand-off of the items to Inspector Cheechoo took place on January 16, 2015 at 9:15 a.m. at the South Porcupine OPP detachment.

“The OPP is committed to working with NAPS to build strong relationships within the northern communities,” states Staff Sergeant Dan Foy, Commander of the South Porcupine OPP Detachment area.  “Everyone involved hopes this donation will help create a positive alternative activity for youth in those communities.”
