Renfrew OPP has arrested a man following an investigation into distracted thefts and frauds.

On December 9, police responded to a theft and fraud complaint in Renfrew. 

The victim had been distracted by a thief while shopping at a local business. The victim later discovered that a bank card had been stolen while being distracted and that access was gained to bank accounts. The investigation has determined that the suspect used the victim's bank cards at various businesses to obtain cash.

Vasile Stan, 41, of Romania, is charged with:

  •  Theft of credit card
  • 14 counts of possession of a credit card
  • 13 counts of use of credit card
  • 13 counts of fraud under $5,000

The OPP reminds the public to beware of distracted theft, as thieves target individuals in grocery stores, shopping establishments and at Automated Teller Machines. 

Here are suggested tips to protect yourself

  • Never leave your personal belongings unattended,
  • Keep your wallet and valuables secure,
  • Do not allow yourself to be distracted by individuals and notify staff of suspicious behaviour at checkouts
  • Protect your banking Personal Identification Number (PIN) while entering information into a banking device.
