Collision shuts down highway 11

(SOUTH PORCUPINE, ON) – Members of the Matheson Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were called to the scene of a motor vehicle collision that occurred on Highway 11, Bowman Township, at approximately 2:04 pm on January 2, 2015.

The collision involved a southbound pick-up truck traveling from Fourth Avenue, Matheson, and a tractor trailer traveling northbound on Highway 11.  Matheson Fire Department also attended the scene.

The driver of the pick-up, Carl ANDERSON, 70, of Matheson, was transported by Timmins Ambulance to hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.  The driver of the tractor trailer, Marlene BERNIER, 35, of Riviere-Du-Loup, Quebec, was treated for minor injuries and released.  Her passenger Joshua THOMPSON, 29, of Hadashville, Manitoba, was not injured.

Highway 11 has been closed in both directions as the investigation into the collision continues.  Detours have been set up at Burton Road for light traffic and at Fourth Avenue, Matheson, for heavier traffic.  The estimated duration of road advisory is unavailable at this time.

The OPP Technical Traffic Collision Investigators are assisting with this ongoing investigation.
