North Bay Police Services handed out about a dozen certificates yesterday to mark what it is calling the "Citizens' Police Academy."

The event offers community members the opportunity to learn about their local police service and the legal system. It ran every Wednesday night for six weeks at the North Bay Police Headquarters before an enthusiastic class representing a cross-section of citizens.

The classes, which were interactive, included popular topics such as crime trends, traffic enforcement, criminal investigations, fraud, forensics, emergency response, and police training. Often times, information was of the "eye-popping" variety, especially when dealing with the local drug culture and human trafficking issues.

Topics were presented by experts in their particular field and often included demonstrations and participation by members of the class.

"The Citizens Police Academy is an educational program offered by the North Bay Police Service to enhance a partnership with the general public," said Cst. John Schultz. "The academy was well received by an enthusiastic group. North Bay Police will be looking to the fall of 2019 to engage Callander and North Bay residents with a second academy."
