The Honourable Tony Clement (Parry Sound—Muskoka), on behalf of the Honourable Greg Rickford,
Canada’s Minister of Natural Resources and Minister for the Federal Economic Development Initiative
for Northern Ontario (FedNor), announced today an investment to help create jobs, growth and
economic opportunities in the Almaguin Highlands region.
A FedNor investment of $727,875 will be used to construct an 8,500-square-foot public building to
support business growth in the Village of South River. The funding will also enable the community to
extend municipal services to the development site, which will be located along Highway 124 in the
downtown commercial district.
Quick Facts
Once complete, the new facility will accommodate the expansion of the Highlander Brew
Company, a move that will allow this local business to double its production to meet national
and international demand for its products. The facility will also feature community storefront
areas and a common space that will be available for tourism-related activities.
The funding announced today is provided through FedNor’s Northern Ontario Development
Program, which supports projects that promote sustainable community economic development,
enhance business development and growth, and facilitate innovation throughout the region.
Since 2006, through FedNor’s Northern Ontario Development Program, the Harper Government
has invested $354 million in support of more than 1,600 projects. These investments have
supported more than 21,500 jobs throughout Northern Ontario.
