They work behind the scenes, but if you have a house fire or other disaster, they're there to help.

And so Walmart Canada is geared up for a cross-country campaign to raise much-needed funds for Canadian Red Cross disaster preparedness and response activities.

The campaign will run in Walmart stores across the country from October 2nd to October 31st, with an ambitious goal of $3 million, of which over $700,000 are matching funds from Walmart.

“Working with the Walmart North Bay Team, we hope to raise monies to continue our work assisting community members during times of need”, says Dennis Chippa, Branch Ambassador for the Red Cross. “We’re very excited to work with Walmart during this annual fundraising campaign, and hope that North Bay Walmart shoppers will continue their support of the Canadian Red Cross disaster preparedness and response initiatives across the country.”

"To date this year, we have set 80 people up with food, lodging, clothing and more for three days as a result of personal disaster like fires. Some we had to take care of for even longer than the three days.  Last year in total we had 70 people, so our numbers have increased this year for sure. We are also going to be on site at Walmart with information displays for folks to learn about being prepared for an emergency, particularly weather related when we can lose power for several days. With winter approaching, we want to make sure North Bay and area residents are prepared."

At the Walmart checkout, cashiers will offer customers the opportunity to make a modest donation to support the work of the Canadian Red Cross in their community.

The Canadian Red Cross is a member of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, which includes the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, the International Committee of the Red Cross and 189 national Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies globally. The Canadian Red Cross mission is to improve the lives of vulnerable people by mobilizing the power of humanity in Canada and around the world.
