Woman cyclist left with life-threatening injuries after being hit by a car

 Police have arrested a Barrie man after a female cyclist was hit and left to die in a ditch while the motorist fled.

Yesterday at approximately 9 a.m. Almaguin Highlands OPP officers investigated the hit and run on Highway 124.

"Police investigation revealed that a vehicle was travelling eastbound on Highway 124 when it struck an eastbound cyclist, causing her to land in the south side ditch," said Constable Louise Maki. "The cyclist, June Bell, 70, of Barrie, was taken to hospital by EMS with life threating injuries. The driver of the vehicle left the scene."

Just over an hour later,  police found the suspect vehicle and driver in Parry Sound.

They arrested and charged Darren Miller, 54 of Barrie with:

  • fail to stop at the scene of an accident causing bodily harm,
  • and dangerous operation of motor vehicle causing bodily harm,

Miller is being held in police custody and is to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice today in Parry Sound.
