Winter storm warning for
North Bay - Powassan - Mattawa continued

20 to 30 centimetres of snow possible from Lake Superior northeastward..Snow changing to freezing rain..Ice pellets or rain northeast of Lake Huron.

This is a warning that dangerous winter weather conditions are imminent or occurring in these regions. Monitor weather conditions..Listen for updated statements.

A winter storm currently gathering steam over central Indiana is expected to cross eastern Michigan today then move into Lake Huron tonight before exiting the province Wednesday morning somewhere between North Bay and Earlton. Precipitation from this system will be greatly enhanced by a plume of tropical moisture from the gulf of Mexico that has already spread heavy snow into regions east of Lake Superior including Sault Ste Marie. Meanwhile freezing rain has spread into southern Ontario.

The heavy snow currently east of Lake Superior will continue spreading northeastward today southeast of a line from Wawa to Moosonee and persist through much of tonight before ending Wednesday morning. Many areas from eastern Lake Superior to Chapleau to the Timmins Cochrane and Abitibi areas will receive storm totals near 20 centimetres with a few localities possibly receiving up to 30 centimetres.

Meanwhile for regions further south including Manitoulin..Elliot Lake..Sudbury..North Bay and Earlton it is likely that the snow will change over to either freezing rain..Ice pellets or even rain depending on the exact track of the system. As a result some of these areas will receive significantly less snow..Perhaps more in the range of 5 to 15 centimetres..With the lighter amounts most likely for Manitoulin and regions along the northeast shore of Lake Huron.

The Ontario storm prediction centre of Environment Canada continues to monitor this situation and will update this warning as the situation evolves.
