Former Nipissing MPP Al McDonald will likely announce his intention to seek the federal Conservative nomination for the Nipissing-Timiskaming riding.

A media conference has been called for Wednesday morning at 10 at the North Bay General Hospital Scollard site, where, a news release states, "McDonald will be making an important announcement about his intentions for the upcoming federal election."

McDonald had been North Bay's deputy mayor but ran for the provincial Tories in a byelection to replace former Ontario premier and Nipissing MPP Mike Harris.

He beat George Maroosis in a race so tight a judicial recount was triggered, earning him the nickname Avalanche Al.

But McDonald was unseated last October by Monique Smith, who became the riding's MPP as the Ontario Liberals swept to power.
