Sean Mullan was reflecting on some pretty amazing memories as he walked down the sidelines of the Widdifield secondary school field, painting lines.

Friday, October 4 will be the last time the Widdifield Wildcats will host a home game as the school is scheduled to close at the end of the school year.

“There are a lot of good memories here,” said Mullan, the longtime coach of the NDA football team.

“You know win or lose a lot of quality time has been shared with some great kids over the years.”

When news came that the school was closing, Mullan looked at trying to move their final home game, scheduled for Friday, October 4 against West Ferris, moved from Steve Omischl Sports Complex over to Widdifield for one final game.

“We are not really focussing that this is the last home game,” said Mullan.

“Whether the school was closing or not we have a lot of guys moving on next year so either way, it would be their last home game so I don’t need to get them motivated, they were pretty excited for us to change the game to have it here.”

Mullan will always be a proud Wildcat. He has won four NDA senior football championships as a coach and one with Widdifield as a player.  He was part of the 1988 championship team that included CFL Hall of Famer and current Winnipeg Blue Bombers head coach Mike O’Shea.

“I'm proud of the fact that a lot of us know our school as a volleyball school and of course, boys volleyball runs the same time as football and when I took over for Roger I did not want the school to be known just as a volleyball school anymore,” said Mullan.

“I wanted us to be competitive in all athletics. I have been surrounded with a great group of community volunteers over the years that have helped me put out a team that is competitive each and every year.”

The Wildcats home field finale will take place on Friday at 1:30 p.m. at Widdifield.
