RIDE usually stops drug or alcohol-impaired drivers, but police got a surprise this weekend when a checkpoint discovered a huge stash of marijuana plants located in the vehicle.
It happened Friday evening as OPP conducted RIDE on Main Street in Kearney, south of North Bay.
A vehicle entered the checkpoint and officers detected an odour of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle. Further investigation led officers to seize 525 marijuana plants.
As a result, the driver and passenger, both from Markham, were charged.
Ling Rong You, 27, is charged with:
- Possession of more than four cannabis plants (not budding or flowering)
- Possess, produce, sell, distribute, or import anything with the intention to use it to produce, sell or distribute illicit cannabis
Zongxiu Jiang, 34, is charged with:
- Possession of more than four cannabis plants (not budding or flowering)
- Possess, produce, sell distribute or import anything with the intention to use it to produce, sell or distribute illicit cannabis
- Possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime over $5,000
Both were released from police custody and are scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice on Thursday, May 13 in Sundridge.
