You sometimes read in news reports about the Province's Special Investigations Unit getting involved in assorted police matters.

When police officers are involved in incidents where someone has been seriously injured, dies or alleges sexual assault, the SIU has the statutory mandate to conduct independent investigations to determine whether a criminal offence took place.

Now it's launched a video series to provide you with quick, informative answers to frequently asked questions about the Unit’s mandate, jurisdiction and investigative process.

The first video is titled “An Overview of the SIU.”

Additional videos will be posted regularly in the coming weeks and months. Topics of future videos include:

  • SIU Investigators
  • How the SIU is Notified
  • Components of an SIU Investigation
  • Length of an Investigation
  • Disclosing Information
