West Ferris arena in better shape than expected?

“After completion of the structural analysis of the trusses it was concluded that the existing truss system properly maintained is currently capable of resisting the existing dead loads and applied snow loads that are typical for an arched roof in North Bay."

The City of North Bay is no longer concerned that snow loads over 150 mm will cause a safety concern for skaters and hockey players at West Ferris arena.

In December of 2015 a preliminary report from consulting engineers relating to a Condition Assessment of the City’s arena’s warned that West Ferris arena will need to shut down if too much snow accumulates on the roof.

The consultants reported that the aging facility would need to be closed if more than 150 mm of snow accumulates on the round porting of the roof which is over top the ice surface, which happened in February last year after a heavy snowfall.

But the final report indicates the roof can still withstand the heavy snowfall.

“After completion of the structural analysis of the trusses it was concluded that the existing truss system properly maintained is currently capable of resisting the existing dead loads and applied snow loads that are typical for an arched roof in North Bay,” John Severino, Managing Director of Community Services with the City of North Bay.

“Therefore conditions related to the barrel roof implemented in December of 2015 were removed.”

Severino adds the the city has kept with the standard operating procedures with respect to the snow loads on the lower flat roof that included monitoring and removal of excessive accumulation of snow on the lower flat roof.

“To date I am not aware of any disruptions to programming,” stated Severino.

That still does not change the City’s status on the aging arena which was given three years left on its lifespan by consultants back in December of 2015.
