During the next few weeks elementary schools from all four school boards will be involved in the delivery of the Welcome to Kindergarten program.

This program was originally developed by the Toronto District School Board but since 2002 has been managed and enhanced by The Learning Partnership. Funding for the program is provided by the Ontario Trillium Corporation and the Literacy and Numeracy branch of the Ministry of Education. Each school has received a variety of resources intended to enhance the literacy and numeracy readiness of each child entering junior kindergarten in September 2006. Resources included in the Welcome to Kindergarten Bag are:

- Early readers

- Crayons

- Play dough

- Primary pencils

- Safety scissors

- Construction paper

- Writing pad

- Glue stick

Community inserts including bookmarks from the library, the Nipissing Developmental Screen and the YMCA pamphlet on how to raise a reader.

At each school, parents and children have been invited to participate in interactive activities designed by educators to provide additional support for learning in these areas. Community partners have made a significant contribution to the bag while working with teachers in the delivery of the program, sharing their resources and expertise as children make the transition from preschool to kindergarten.
