This week looks good with above-average highs hovering around the freezing mark

With northern Ontario's cold weather, a battery charger is a must-have in your garage.

Whew! The weather hasn't been that bad this winter, and now we're over the hump things will start getting even better.

This past week is statistically the coldest of the year.

Old Man Winter let us know, throwing a couple of minus 30 days in recently. The average high for January in North Bay is minus 7 with the average low at minus 17 according to time and date. The average February high is minus 6 with the average low of minus 16.

This week looks good with above-average highs hovering around the freezing mark.

Even though the winter solstice (the sun is at its lowest point in the sky) was December 21, which means the days are getting longer and the Sun is beginning to appear higher in the sky, the warmth stored in the ground over the summer and fall periods has already been released. This means January is colder until the atmosphere has time to catch up, usually about six weeks.

Also, the earth's axis of rotation is tilted as it spins around the sun. As a result, we are tilted towards the sun in the summer and away from the sun in the winter.

The good news is that from now on the weather will improve. In fact, both today and tomorrow will hit zero, and the weekend looks very promising.

The record high for today was set in 1991 at 4.2.

The average temperature for February is minus 6, so look for slight improvements every day.

The hottest month in North Bay is July with an average daytime temperature of 19. The windiest is April and the wettest is October.

Love it or hate it, Daylight Saving Time this year is Sunday, March 12, at 2 a.m. when clocks are set one hour forward.
